10 miles - 2 mile warmup, 6 mile tempo at marathon pace, 2 mile cool down.

This morning was the first time I have worn shorts on a morning run this year! It was nice to not pull tights on. I felt good during the tempo and was having fun while I was doing it. I am glad that I hit the 6 miles under marathon pace.

I don't know exactly what my goal is going to be in the next two months before my race with the tempo runs. I originally thought I would work my way up to 10 and stop there, but now I am considering maybe continuing to up it each week by 1 mile. That would push me to 13 or 14 miles depending on when I do my last tempo before tapering. What do people think?

I suggest you give the 20 miler with 10 easy and 10 tempo. I will probably be doing that in April (on a Saturday) with Sasha up and down Provo Canyon if you are interested to join in.

I am also thinking of doing a long run around Pineview Reservoir sometime before the marathon as well.

I think Chad's advice is good, truthfully I said I don't know how to run Ogden but with the last 10 miles of downhill I think hitting goal pace isn't going to be as hard as getting your legs to be used to steep downhill on tired legs. Get some long runs in and then pound downhill at the end. Don't worry about longer tempo, seriously build up your quads cause that course is a killer.

Nice tempo today! I'm kind of stuck with not knowing how far to go with my tempos before my May 18 marathon, too. The thing I do like about tempos is how confidence building they are. With that alone I'm leaning myself towards putting in around a 13 mile tempo a bit before tapering. My marathon's flat though.

Thanks for the tips guys!

Chad - I might take you up on a run in April, however I feel like I will slow you and Sasha down.

Rob - would you say that those last 10 or so of Ogden are as steep as Big Cottonwood was? I think I might need to go drive the course to get a feel. After Big Cottonwood my quads never got sore, but I ran quite a bit of downhill training for that one.

Matt - a flat race sounds nice, but I really like downhill. I fell like it is my forte a bit.

No, Big Cottonwood is steeper. But Ogden comes at the end which makes a big difference. Practice running uphill and then pounding downhill. Running up Provo Canyon with Chad and Sasha for 10 miles and then coming back down is perfect.
