45 min on spin bike. I have some thoughts about it. I will share them tomorrow.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
8.000.000.000.008.00

I have never really cared for New Year's resolutions. I have always been the "if you want to set a goal or make a change just do it now and don't wait until the new year" kind of guy. However, I often find myself lost in contemplation. The beginning of a new year is as good a time as any to take a look back. I am constantly evaluating where I stand in regards to running. The following is where I stand today.

Three years ago I decided to buy my first pair of running shoes. Running changed my life. I can say that on here, this blog, because you fellow runners will understand, certainly more than others, what that means. If you need more of an explanation, join me for a long run and I would be happy to explain.

I have made some significant improvements and have achieved things I never thought I would in those three years. Yet, I feel like I am just being introduced to this mammoth beast known as running. I am a rookie with high hopes for the future. I finished 2014 off strong with just shy of 2500 miles and a solid base to roll into the new year. I have a goal to run my fastest marathon to date at Ogden in May. It is going to take a lot of work, but I feel like I have the necessary tools to do the work.

I am trying to see where I can work a little harder and tweak my training here and there. Typically, I run 6 days a week. 99.9% of the time I only run once a day. 6 days a week without any doubles (and a full-time job and family) naturally caps the number of miles I can log. So, I am trying to see where I can make adjustments to take the next step up.

I have never "cross-trained." It  is not that I don't think I could benefit from it. I am sure I would. It is just that the time I have carved out for running, I dedicate to running. I enjoy one day off a week. I feel like it helps me mentally. I am starting to wonder if I really need it though. Occasionally I log some easy miles on Sunday to loosen up from a strenuous long Saturday run or workout. I have found that I still get my mental break, but also start the week off with 4-5 miles. Yesterday, I hopped on the spin bike for 45 minutes. Again, there was no mental strain in deciding to hop on or not. It was quite refreshing to do something physical other than running. And, it didn't cut into my running time.

Perhaps, I am simply writing this to digest it all for myself. Here seemed like a good place to do so. So, now I look forward. Here's to another year.

Some good thoughts here. You've definitely improved and will keep doing so. Your dedication is impressive and inspiring.

Maybe you should get a road bike and we can start going on some Sunday rides :)

From james (runmehappy) on Tue, Jan 06, 2015 at 08:31:55 from 50.203.76.218

Thanks Adam. I think I would enjoy a good Sunday bike ride. It might be the only day of the week I would feel safe on the roads because they are slightly less crowded.

I think you guys might have cut right in front of me on 3300S by the cemetery. A pack of 4 flashed by for a few seconds.

From james (runmehappy) on Tue, Jan 06, 2015 at 09:17:23 from 50.203.76.218

Yeah that could have been us. I don't know if I have ever been moving at a pace to "flash by" anyone though. I am typically just trying to hang on!

From Fritz on Tue, Jan 06, 2015 at 09:18:23 from 65.116.116.6

that must have been us. We then meandered through the cemetary. Not sure if it's along your route but we typically meet at HHS at 6:15 Tuesday through Friday for around 10 miles. Tomorrow we are jogging over to Liberty Park for a short fartlek, something like 4 x (4 on, 2 off). You should join us sometime if you are doing a longer run to work.

From Jake K on Tue, Jan 06, 2015 at 09:21:41 from 199.190.170.22

Met Fritz and JP at HHS and warmed up over to Liberty for a workout of 4 x (4min on 2min off).

I wanted to start at about a 5:55 pace and maybe work down a little each repeat if I felt alright. We all stuck pretty close together on the first loop and then JP and Fritz dropped their pace. I started feeling it on the second repeat and had to give myself a little pep talk. I knew it was a little too fast as well. I backed off on the third a little and then slowed even more on the last one. I wanted to see how the last one would feel right at about 6:05 to see if I could feel relatively comfortable at that pace. All in all, it was a good workout though I would have liked to have felt better at the end.

The average paces for the 4 repeats were 5:52, 5:43, 5:51, 6:06.

From Josh E on Wed, Jan 07, 2015 at 10:15:08 from 205.235.104.4

Easier said than done but if you would've stayed closer to 5:50 on 2, 3 would have gone better. Also, not sure where the hill was in these repeats but that's a possible factor. Hopefully 6:05 felt pretty comfortable.

Finally, while it's frustrating to not keep up (I have been there many a time) I think what you are feeling is good. As the lego ninjago ninjas say, iron sharpens iron.

Ran over to Liberty from HHS with Fritz and JP for a workout of 6 x straightaways (~.4) with resting on the bends. I wanted to start at a 5:30 pace and hopefully drop the last 2 a little. 5:30, 5:30, 5:25, 5:30, 5:41, 5:25. On the fifth one, my left leg started feeling weak like it wasn't firing correctly. It almost felt like I was dragging it along. I contemplated bailing on the last one, but gave it what I had and the leg felt ok. I obviously have some imbalance issue there, or something, I need to work out. Felt good to finish strong though and overcome the desire to quit early.

PM - 25 min on spin bike. Stretching. Foam Roller.

Hopefully she has to repay her winnings,

The World Marathon Majors -- the six-race consortium that includes Boston, London, Berlin, Tokyo, Chicago and New York -- has the authority to demand repayment of prize money under the terms of its athletes' contract. However, any such action and the stripping of her titles will remain on hold until the appeals process is exhausted.

Her $500,000 WMM bonus for winning both races last year is also in limbo until the case has run its course.

From Jake K on Fri, Jan 30, 2015 at 10:32:35 from 159.212.71.17

While the fact that she even got caught is great, and will miss the WCs/Olympics, it's sort of a farce that she only is banned for two years. I hope we start to see longer term (4-8 year) or even lifetime bans from competition.

Good luck at the 5K tomorrow. I don't know if you've ever raced out there, but there are marks on the road measuring out every kilometer, so you can really get a good sense of pace.

i vote for lifetime bans. a two year ban is way too soft a punishment for cheating people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, or as shalane flanagan said, cheating people out of experiencing those special moments, which are far more valuable than ca$h.

Slower than I had hoped but feel good about the effort. The wind was strong on the way back. I felt really good until about a mile left, typical for the 5k for me. I didn't know, but Rob was right behind me until about a mile to go when he came next to me. I was happy to see him and he helped pull me to the finish. Kicked hard at the end and was happy to finish right in front, though Rob had the faster time. So, big thanks to Rob!

5:46, 5:51, 6:14, :41 - 18:33 - 3.12 - 5:55avg (all from watch) - Official results are in now and it was an 18:35

hard to say if this was a PR or not. i ran a 17:59 at murray last year, but the course was short. i may have run faster that day, but who knows. so, i will consider the 18:35 my PR for now. nothing fancy, but i am happy having only run 5 5ks.

Good job James. Not very far off your goal. It isn't too common to see almost everyone with a 30 second difference in their 1st and 3rd miles in a 5K. That wind must have been worse than we thought.

Nice race James.

I started a little ways back and started my watch when I crossed what I imagined to be the starting line. I also make it a policy to stop my watch a second or two early so I get a faster time.

You should try it.

Thanks Rob. That is a good strategy. Perhaps I will give it a shot.

Thanks Angie. I am excited for this year.

my quads are pretty sore from saturday's race. i would have liked to have gotten out for a few miles yesterday, but there was no time to squeeze it in. might be the case every sunday for a while.

one thing i had not noticed until i ran this morning is that my calves are not sore at all from saturday's race. this is very unique for me and is a huge step in the right direction. i have had at least one sore calf or both calves after every race for almost 2 years. didn't matter the distance, something was not right. i don't know if i am ready to cross out my goal to the left of figuring out my calf issue completely, but i am on the right track.

also, i looked at my past 5ks (i have only run 5) and i think saturday was a PR for me. Murray last year might have ended up faster, but it was a short course. so, my 17:59 there doesn't count.

sasha tacked on 20-25 seconds to the murray course, depending on the runner. i think your 18:33 is probably the better performance, given the conditions.

good news about your calves. are you doing something specific to strengthen/balance them, or just working on your overall form?

From james (runmehappy) on Mon, Feb 02, 2015 at 11:22:11 from 50.203.76.218

allie, i am hoping that saturday's performance was better. i am going to run another 5k in 2 weeks to see where I am at again. i am excited for that race because it is the same course i ran on thanksgiving.

i have tried to be diligent at stretching to help improve my calves. i have also been working on overall form as well. i tend to have a midfoot strike and fade into a heel strike. i definitely don't strike up on my toes or forefoot. my body is a work in progress, but i think i am starting to dial things in better.

Accepted today as an "off" day and just kept on trucking to 9 miles. Never felt great. Legs felt heavy and my breathing seemed a little off for the first couple miles. Some days are just like that I guess.

Going to shoot for a track workout tomorrow and then take Thursday and Friday super easy and short to taper for my birthday run of 31 on Saturday.

Met Fritz and Dan at HHS. Warmed up around Sugar House once and then headed to the track. I had a plan to do 12 x 400 at about 5k pace or slightly faster. I didn't want to push it too hard. Just wanted to get in the flow. I have done this workout twice relatively recently. Today, I ended up doing a baker's dozen (13x400) and then the final 200.

JUNE '14 - 88, 90, 88, 88, 89, 87, 88, 86, 86, 86, 80, 76 and a 32 for 200 to hit 5k.

AUGUST '14 - 87, 86, 86, 85, 85, 85, 85, 84, 85, 84, 79, 73 and a 32 for 200 to hit 5k.

TODAY - 91, 89, 88, 87, 87, 86, 86, 84, 84, 83, 82, 82, 70, and a 32 for the 200.

Overall, they felt pretty easy, aside from the last 400 and the 200 of course. That is a good sign and I think this is a pretty good benchmark to go off of coupled with my 5k from last Saturday.

9 easy

I was planning on taking today and tomorrow pretty easy to "taper" for Saturday, but I figured 9 super easy wouldn't do any harm. Ask me if I was wrong come mile 28 on Saturday. I will likely only do 3-4 tomorrow.

I felt surprisingly good after yesterday's workout. I thought I could feel a little tightening in my right calf, but it never really surfaced. Track speed still seems to cause some sort of flare up in the calves, so I will have to watch that. I wore compression sleeves on my calves and quads yesterday after the workout. Perhaps that helped.

Felt pretty good the entire time. Had no real pace goal other than keeping it near 8:30. Just a long fun run was the plan. Gradually picked up the pace the second half and then pushed the last mile for giggles and to see how the legs were and finished mile 31 in a 6:44. Don't know about 32 next year. But today was fun.

I didn't feel great on my 2.25 warmup. Just didn't feel in the groove. That changed once the race started. My main goal was to run faster than I did on Thanksgiving (18:39) on this same course.

There were a couple people at the start that said they were hoping for sub-18. I decided I would hang on to them as long as I could and if I blew apart, so be it. The course is one big square with the first 1.25 slightly downhill and the rest slightly uphill, aside from the final .1 which goes back to a slight down to flat.

First mile was fast but it felt alright. The uphill took its toll, but I actually felt relatively good until mile 2.5. The wheels started to come off and my pace dropped. I hung on the best I could and snagged a PR. It might not have been the prettiest but it is what it is. Happy to be improving.

Met Fritz, Dan, and Noah at HHS and warmed up with a loop of Sugar House before heading to the track. Planned on doing 12x400 with 400 rests. Goal was to run the 400s faster than usual, but have a little longer rest in between.

I thought 80 seconds per would be a good effort for me and something I would have to work for. I planned on starting at 85 and working down to 80 by the fifth repeat and then trying to hold that.

The first repeat was right at 80, so too fast. I figured I would back off on the second to not risk burning out. Second was right at 80 as well, but felt slightly easier than the first. So, I just went with it. I ended up cutting my rests to about 300 by cutting across the field to catch back up to Fritz and Noah. This made holding a decent pace a lot easier because I had them to keep in site. I fell back on the third split and it was my slowest. From then on I started cutting.

I couldn't have held together if I didn't have Fritz and Noah to chase and if I didn't have Dan encouraging me. I planned on pushing the final repeat, but Dan told me to try and push the second to last as well. I hung right behind Fritz and Noah as long as I could and I am really pleased with this workout.

Thanks Jake. I have been wanting to hang it for some time now and finally got around to it. I didn't spray them actually. A couple people asked me that. I had not worn the shoes in so long, they no longer had a lingering odor. I might spray them now just to be safe though.

From james (runmehappy) on Sun, Mar 01, 2015 at 09:33:38 from 75.169.92.99

Thanks Fritz. I have felt a good benefit from the 20s. I don't know for sure on how many more this cycle. 8 more Saturdays before my taper into Ogden. What would you suggest?

From Fritz on Sun, Mar 01, 2015 at 12:05:14 from 71.35.215.168

That's a tough question and I think it depends on lots of variables, i.e. what you are doing the rest of the week, how fast you are running these 20s, race/family conflicts, etc. I wouldn't recommend a 20 every weekend but considering you aren't running super high miles during the week I could see why 4 to 6 more could be helpful. I would recommend mixing in 6, 8 and then 10 miles at MP in the 20s closer to the race. A key workout for me, that seems to have worked, is racing a half two or three weeks before a marathon and then adding 7 after the race. It's good to get used to running on tired legs. My schedule this year will be Boston on April 20, Provo City Half May 2, 5K race May 9 then Ogden on May 16. Ideally Ogden would come two weeks later but that's outside my control.

Met Fritz, Noah, and Nate at Highland for a track workout. Warmed up with a lap of Sugar House. The track was covered in snow so we improvised and headed to do laps of the inside of Sugar House. We did 8 x 1/2 mile on and 1/4 mile off. It was an exercise in blowing apart and hanging on for me. I am pleased with the effort considering the hills. The 6th repeat was really rough though. My left leg got upset and I almost pulled the plug. I was able to collect myself though during the rest and felt a lot better on 7 and 8. Cooled down for a few with Fritz.

I will either run a tempo on Friday or on Saturday mixed into a long run. There is a chance I might head to the Wedge Overlook on Saturday and run easy on a trail. If I head down there, I hope to work the tempo on Friday. Decisions. Decisions.

Felt ok considering yesterday's workout, but I can definitely feel it in my quads. Glad  my calf doesn't hurt though. That is important to me. My left side near my hip and glute is a little sore. 18 - 6:58 - 906ft

Didn't feel good from the moment I laced up. Met Jen and Emily at Liberty and ran up to the U and then ran the Salt Lake half course.

I had planned on 18-20 with a tempo of 6 in the middle. Jen wanted to finish strong but not do the middle tempo. I simply felt off. It was not that I was running particularly slow, I just didn't feel good. We were already giving a solid effort by the time we hit 11th avenue. Here, I contemplated bagging the tempo and just slog to the end in my funk. Instead I decided to try and shake the funk with 2 miles at half marathon effort. When I finished those, still feeling like junk, I decided to keep running. I ended up with 4 at a 6:06 average.

Once again I was spent and it was time to hang on till the end of the long run. I circled back and met Jen and Emily and finished strong back to Liberty still feeling pretty miserable. I lost them on the Liberty loop and called it good at 18. It was another good test of running the legs down and then having to muster the strength to continue. We had a couple at marathon pace after my tempo so all in all I am happy with the run and the speed I got in with the miles.

Don't know exactly how this week will play out and what goals I have. I might use it as a little bit of a down week. I have been going pretty strong with consistent high mileage. Could be nice to back off one week and rest up a tad. Hill repeats on Wednesday and then possibly a tempo run on Friday. Thursday is Whit's 30th birthday so we have some weekend plans that will take precedence over running.

Drove over to HHS to meet Fritz and crew, but I was the only one that showed. We had planned on hill repeats but I contemplated other options as I warmed up around Sugar House. I ultimately decided on a 6 mile tempo at goal-ish marathon pace. I have been wanting to do this for a bit and decided this morning was as good a time as any. My legs were feeling good and I had taken the previous 2 days pretty easy.

I decided to run an out and back along 1700 to keep the tempo flat and honest. Within the first mile I could tell that I was breathing too hard. It felt almost more like something between 5k and half marathon effort. (I would say 10k effort, but I have never run one before so I have no idea what that feels like). Each time I looked at my watch, my pace seemed to slip back to 6:25. I should have maybe taken that as a sign and just tried to maintain that, but I wanted the 6:15-6:20. I contemplated pulling the plug at 3 miles, but pushed it to 4. My legs were starting to feel heavy and it was AGAIN not my day.

6:18, 6:18, 6:15, 6:16

I ran back to Sugar House and decided to punish myself a little more with some hill repeats on the eastside grassy knoll. I did 10 up and down and then finished the morning with a lap of Sugar House.

Random rambling: Perhaps I need to commit to just having a down week. I probably should not have attempted the tempo this morning. I have had some good workouts and long runs in the past 2 weeks, but I need to get in a good tempo that will build my confidence. Maybe that needs to wait until next week. I still have some time until Ogden, but I feel like it is going to creep up fast.

Also, maybe I need to adjust my goal pace for Ogden. Then again, maybe it is too early to tell. I have been logging more miles this cycle. I have thought that my body has adjusted and I should be able to nail workouts, but maybe I need to back off mileage? My easy days are run super slow so I know I am not burning out on those. I will likely finish out this week pretty easy and then hopefully feel refreshed for next week.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Finally, the real champion this morning was the sunrise. It was outstanding.

I think that you have been doing some incredible workouts and you do not need to adjust your goal for Ogden. A down week can be just as beneficial as a high mileage with tempos because your body needs that time to adjust. I suspect that you will bounce back with some strong workouts leading up to Ogden after a "down" week.

Also, I agree with the sunrise comment. It was super!

From allie on Mon, Mar 16, 2015 at 10:14:53 from 73.207.133.226

i agree with scott -- down weeks can be very helpful during high mileage/intensity training. i also don't think you need to adjust your goal (i actually don't know your goal -- sub-2:50?)

you still have a solid two months before the race. lots of time to continue to build, adjust, become a monster, etc.

From james (runmehappy) on Mon, Mar 16, 2015 at 10:22:51 from 50.203.76.218

allie - thanks for the comment. i feel like last week was a good choice. i might even do it again this week. my run on saturday rocked my quads more than i had planned. 2700 feet did a number.\

my "a" goal for ogden would be 2:45, but i for sure want sub-2:50. i don't know if 2:45 is doable this spring. i might need a 2:48-9 before that to build confidence etc.

Right near my house is what I have designated as the "Foxy Loop." It is 1.53 miles and essentially flat. I thought it would be a good workout to do two loops with a half mile rest in between. I had a goal to hold a 6:00 pace for the loops, thus ~9 min per loop. I was pretty wiped by the end, but was pleased with my effort.

8:59 and 8:56

I don't know if 1.5 miles at 6:00 should feel easier to me or not. I was thinking about it when I was cooling down and it was a year ago in June when I really started logging my first back to back miles sub-6. Those were running with Josh and Adam along 11th Ave and down Memory Grove. With that in perspective, I think I should be pleased I can hold that pace for 1.5 on the flat, but I don't know if I should be improving more.

Still planning on racing Saturday and then will hope for a good tempo next week to judge where my marathon pace fitness is at. Hope to have some help with that tempo so I don't have to go it solo.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
5.000.003.100.008.10

I have been in a bit of a rut lately and I was hoping that I felt good today racing and the race would pull me out of the rut. It did!

Saw Anthony at the registration and then waited for Whit to show up with our two girls. My mom came and picked them up and Whit and I hopped on the bus. This was my first time running this race and it was interesting taking a bus for a 5k. I warmed up 3 miles solo and then made my way to the start. Saw Dan on his bike and he told me that he wanted to see a 17:30 out of me today. I told him that was the goal and what I was hoping for.

I toed the line with Anthony right in front of me. I knew this way I could avoid having to run around anyone in the first 50 meters. Front pack took off flying and I quickly backed off after seeing sub-5 on my watch. I anticipated a 5:45-5:50 first mile and then was planning on dropping the pace from there.

I was feeling good and controlled so I tried to just run off of effort and only look at my watch on occasion to keep me in check. First mile came in a 5:35 and I was pleased. I was a little worried about blowing apart, but I handled the incline alright through research park. I backed off a hair but kept a steady pace. This is where I was able to clip off a few people. Once we turned down Wakara, we were pretty separated and I ran about 30 meters back from a guy the rest of the race. Mile 2 came in 5:33 and I was a little worried how I would feel to the finish.

I started to fade a bit on Sunnyside in the final mile, but was still able to hold a 5:40. It was great to see Rob right before entering the track. He told me I only had a 400 to go and it gave me the boost I needed. So, though it is an aided course, I still feel like I ran my best 5k to date. Happy with a PR and happy that I felt good after. I walked back up Sunnyside and ran back to the track with Whit. I am proud of her for getting out there and running. She pretty much hates running, but is trying to get over that.

We met my mom and the girls and Whit took off. I cooled down a couple miles with Anthony and then headed home. All in all it was a great morning and I am feeling good. I am feeling out of the rut and ready to hit the marathon training again next week.

Met Daniel and Noah at HHS, warmed up with a lap of Sugar House, and hopped the fence to the track.

Ran 3 x Daniel 484s with 400 rests. This was a new workout for me and one that Daniel does frequently. It goes like this...one fast(er) 400, straight into an 800 at slightly faster than race pace, and finish going straight into another faster(er) 400.

It was a great workout. Tests you on running race pace with a little tired legs from the first 400 and then tests you on picking up the pace again for the last 400. I will definitely be doing more of these. They seemed to go by faster than straight mile repeats because of the changing it up in the middle. I felt consistent and they were not miserable. Will try to push the 400s a little harder next time.

Met Jen and Daniel at Liberty and drove one car up to 11th ave. Ran roughly miles 1-24 of the Salt Lake Marathon course. Solid effort the whole way. Jen is looking strong and is going to do great. I predict she will be crossing that tape and holding it high. Daniel is a beast and I hope he gets his PR. He is going to run hard.

I am going to say that I am officially past the rut I was in a week ago. I felt good during this run. I had a couple ups and downs, but felt strong to the end. We kept a solid effort and I was able to pick it up at the end. Hoping for another several weeks of solid training before the taper to Ogden.

10 on tired legs

Met Daniel at HHS and the plan was a 6 mile tempo...somewhere between 6:15 and 6:30. Once we started, I knew it was going to be a good workout. Not because I felt fast, but because my legs were still feeling Saturday and the past two days of 10 each. We ran along 1700 and worked our way south and east until 39th south and 20th east and then back. I had to work for the last two miles. My legs were screaming at me like it was the the end of a race. This workout helped me to make the necessary adjustments in stride and arm swing to endure when the legs really had nothing left. I am really pleased with the effort. I have put more miles on my legs this training cycle and I look forward to seeing how my body performs with some rest and a taper come race day.

thanks allie. it was a fight. i really want to get in a 10 mile tempo before ogden, but every time i think i should do it, my legs are already tired and i know i could not have gone another mile yesterday, let alone 4!

From allie on Thu, Apr 02, 2015 at 09:26:17 from 73.207.133.226

maybe wait until you're 1-2 weeks out to do the full 10 mile effort? your legs will probably be feeling a lot better once you get into the taper, then you can really knock it out and still have plenty of time to recover.

that is good advice allie. i have contemplated doing a light taper and running the salt lake half, but don't know if i will or not. if i raced that, it would certainly be a solid tempo. i just don't want to have to recover too much from that and accidentally peak too early for ogden.

3 solo avenues loops. The loop consists of east on 2nd ave, north up Virginia, west on 11th ave, down Memory Grove, and back east on 2nd. In each loop I picked it up for 2.5 miles on 11th and down into the grove. I did this run last year, and it is a test in multiple ways.

I "like" doing it solo because I more than often end up racing alone in no man's land. It is good to test running long runs alone for me. Next, this route is no joke. 1,500 feet of climb starts to weigh on the legs and then I have to shift to fast downhill. I am super pleased with how it went. I took one gel at mile 12 with some water. My 3x2.5s were faster than planned as well. Now time to rest. Happy Easter weekend everyone!

Met JP and Daniel at HHS. Warmed up with a lap of Sugar House Park and then headed to the track. I was planning on some decent effort 400s, but knew my legs were tired so didn't know what to expect.

My pace felt fine and manageable and I gradually got faster. I had a hard time with the 200 recoveries though. I felt like I was slow in getting my heart rate down. Don't know if that was due to being tired and still feeling Saturday's long run / workout or what. I am not too concerned, was just interesting. My left leg did start feeling a little weird on the 6th repeat and I didn't want to push it too much further. Ended up with 8x400. Pushed the pace chasing Daniel on the last one. He clocked a 64 and I obviously was a ways behind.

We finished up with another loop of the park. I would have liked to get 10 in, but I think I might try for 4 more later this afternoon. It was good to see JP again. He has been out with an injury and is now moving to Arizona on Friday. He is a good dude and has been a stalwart at attending the morning runs. Best of luck to him in his new job.

Kept it at about 7:25-7:30 for the way out. Picked it up a hair on the way back and then ran 15-19 sub 6:30. I figured with yesterday's 12 and then a longer run today, pushing 4 miles at the end would be a good test of marathon pace on tired, or at least more tired, legs. Felt good. 11 out on the parkway with 8x0.5 mile repeats.

My initial goal was to just hold the 0.5 mile repeats at about a 6:00 pace. When I got out there, I decided I should push them harder than that. I have not done a speed workout in a couple weeks and my left leg doesn't seem to love the top gear turnover. Today was the same. I felt ok and could have continued to push the pace of the repeats, but as soon as I get down into the 5:30 range, my left leg gets a little upset. So, I did 5 at a quicker clip and then backed off and did the last 3 at about 6:00 min pace.

My goal is to finish this week at 80 miles with a possible tempo tossed into the middle of the 20 miler on Saturday. Next week I will drop my mileage by 30ish% and again the following week. I will have a couple more workouts, but I think I will avoid faster than 6:00 unless someone thinks otherwise. Let me know. I also plan on doing one more 8-10 mile tempo likely next week. That will be my last confidence booster headed into Ogden.

12 easy. Took a few miles to loosen up from yesterday's workout. My legs are pretty fatigued from this training cycle. I feel like they are going to appreciate the taper.

Crossed the 1,000 mile mark for the year. On track for hitting my goal of 3,000 for the year. Though, that might be tough because I don't know how much I will be running the last quarter of this year.

Definitely. Tired and pretty much zero turnover. Last fall I kept up some hard 200s on the track so I didn't get too stale. It seemed to work.

From Jenruns on Fri, Apr 24, 2015 at 14:55:33 from 73.20.25.97

Um, yes...Very tired. I think quick turnover on the track is a good idea to keep the old legs from feeling like a slug

From james (runmehappy) on Fri, Apr 24, 2015 at 15:08:38 from 50.203.76.218

Thanks. I will hit the track again once or twice for some quicker turnover. I know I went into Ogden 2 years ago not fully recovered. I don't want to repeat that.

Wrapped up peak week with my final 20 before Ogden.

Left my house at about 5:30 and headed to Ogden. I wanted to run part of the course because it has been 2 years and I have spent nearly every day trying to suppress my memories of the rainy fiasco known to me as Ogden 2013.

I parked just below the dam at the top of Ogden canyon, and my buddy Nate who lives in Huntsville drove me 20 miles up the course. We ended up a couple miles past the starting point, but I wanted to get in 20 without having to double back or anything. Nate went home to eat a nice breakfast and read a book and I started running.

Took the first 3 miles easy, though I still averaged a 7:22. I have really been wanting a 10 mile tempo to boost my confidence and last night I decided to toss it in today. My legs had 61 miles this week already so I knew it would be a challenge. I ran the next 10 of the course wanting to stay sub-6:30. My left leg was aching in my quad from that first mile but it never really got worse. I just kept plugging along and felt ok until the last mile. I was spent. It was the slowest of the ten, but I still averaged 6:23 for the tempo.

I cruised back easy to my car 7 more miles on the course. Those averaged a 7:30 nice and easy. So overall I was under a 7:00 average for the run, the tempo boosted my confidence, and I am ready to start my taper and recover.

6:21, 6:28, 6:20, 6:19, 6:16, 6:19, 6:24, 6:18, 6:23, and 6:36

2x1min, 3x2min, 2x3min, 2x1min

I kept the first 5 at about a 5:40 pace, the next 2 at 6:00, and the last at about 6:15.

The 5:40 pace felt fine, but I could tell it was agravating my left leg a bit and I am still sore from my massage on Monday night. No sense risking anything at this point. The hard work is done. Time to get to the start line healthy.

Sixteen is perfect. You could throw some marathon paced miles in, or even run a progression run. I think it's important not to overdo it, though. You don't need to test your fitness, now. It's not going anywhere!

Runner Academy has a podcast called "Perfecting the Taper." Might be worth a listen. They say it's their most popular episode.

From james (runmehappy) on Fri, May 01, 2015 at 10:23:36 from 50.203.76.218

Thanks Emily. I like the idea of a slight progression. I have had fun with those in the past but have not done one in a while.

From Jake K on Fri, May 01, 2015 at 10:37:39 from 159.212.71.17

That's a perfect suggestion. 15-16 w/ a progressive finish - enough to remind yourself that you are fit, but not enough to test yourself or take anything out of the tank.

From james (runmehappy) on Fri, May 01, 2015 at 11:01:07 from 50.203.76.218

Thanks Jake. I will plan on that. Trying to leave something in the tank this cycle like you have suggested. Feeling good about Ogden so far!

Went up to my folks in Summit County and hung out for the day. Hopped in the hot tub and massaged some sore spots on the legs. Need to find a way to live up there sometime before retirement age.

Met Fritz at HHS and ran 2 outside Sugar House loops at marathon pace with a couple minute rest in between and then 4x1min on. The track was "closed" due to construction of a new football field so we ran up on 17th.

This was my last workout before Ogden and I felt pretty good. My miles around Sugar House felt smooth and the effort was controlled on the downhill. Was nice to speed up the legs one last time. Now, time to rest and only easy running for me until I PR on the 16th.

Well, it is hear. Race day tomorrow. Always an intense time. I am excited to race. It has been a while since I toed the starting line. I am a little nervous, but that is a given.

My training cycle has been solid. I have put in the miles and done some solid workouts. I have consistenly run more miles each week this cycle than ever before. I averaged high 60's and low 70's. Easily a 10-15 mile increase compared to going in to St. George last year. My track workouts were less structured, but I clipped off some of my fastest intervals chasing Fritz, Noah, and Daniel. My mental game is also stronger. I have more confidence. Also, I don't have a broken rib!

The weather is not looking the best. It is likely going to rain. I am ok with that. I thrive on colder temperatures, so that is good for me. Predicted a 39 degree start. I hope there is no wind. As you all know, you can't push against a wind. I plan on running sub-2:50, but I need to realize if there is a headwind I will need to back off a bit and run a smart race. The training and time spent with friends is what has been great this year. I have grown as a runner and developed some great friendships. Thanks to Fritz, Daniel, Dan, Tyler, Jen, John, Josh, and others for keeping me motivated and pushing me.

Now, time to PR!

The race is the reward for everything done up to that moment. When you are prepared, racing is a celebration of life, fitness and the determination it takes to get to that point. Enjoy it! It will be great! - Josh E.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
10.2016.000.000.0026.20

I ran the Ogden Marathon 2 years ago...in the rain. I ran it again this morning...IN. THE. RAIN!

I ran over 10 minutes slower than my goal, at one point was so cold I was scared, yet had the best marathon experience to date. It is going to take a few words to explain how the previous sentence makes sense. So, bear with me and read on if interested.

My goal going in was sub-2:50. My training would dictate that it was possible (so would the first 16 miles of the marathon). My mental game was sharp going in. All around, I felt good. I had accepted the fact that we were likely going to get rained on. I just didn't want a headwind. I am not capable of holding pace against a wind. Thankfully, the forecast looked decent when I went to bed Friday.

I woke up and ate my typical race-day breakfast of toast and peanut butter in the car on the drive north. I met Ben and I sipped my water and Gatorade and ate a banana on the bus up the canyon. We camped by a car in the field with Leslie and chatted for an hour and fifteen minutes. We were kind of rushed to the start. I saw and wished good luck to Fritz. Talked with Devra for a second and we were on our way.

I planned on taking it easy and just getting in a groove. I ran the first 3 miles with Devra who had a goal of sub-2:50 as well, but really wanted quicker than that. So, at about 3.5 I let her go ahead and stuck to my plan of 6:25s for miles 2-7. The temperature felt great to me. We started getting rain around 6 or so, I can't remember when it officially started, but it was coming down hard by 10 for sure. That is when I was in a little rut. I ran the first 9 miles without much change in the order of runners. Zac was about 50 meters ahead of me until I passed him on a slight climb just before 10. He looked so smooth. I was jealous of his form and how effortless it looked.

I was in that rut until about the half-way point. One of my friends was cheering at mile 11 and that boosted my spirits a little. Around 12, a kid in an orange jersey came up to me and we spent a mile together. He chatted a little and it took my mind off of things. When I hung the left after the half-way point, I was feeling good again and was ready to get through 14 and the one significant hill.

I made it to the hill and slowed down up the climb. Still feeling good and happy to not be in a rut any more. This mile was set to be my slowest, but I was still on pace. I was pleased and was ready to start hammering down and getting into a little quicker turnover again. Some time between 14 and 15 my left leg started to feel heavy. It was right when I needed to drop the pace. [let me interject some background now on my left leg]

I have had a lingering pain in the back of my left leg. Likely one of the multiple pieces that make up what we refer to as the hamstring. In my typical weekly training, it did not bother me. Yet, every so often I would feel this light pain while sitting at work or driving in my car. I came to find out that it was aggravated when I would do speedwork. If I ever dropped down to 5:15-5:30 pace, it would flare up. It flared up on one particular workout at Sugar House Park and the only way I could describe it to Fritz and Noah that day was that it felt like my left leg wasn't firing. I felt like I was having to drag it along to keep up. The last couple weeks of training, I avoided my top speed so I wouldn't aggravate the left leg before the race. However, I had that same lingering pain while sitting. [now back to the race]

So, here I am at 15 feeling good and knowing I am still on pace for a 2:49:XX. My left leg starts to flare. I knew then that I had 2 choices. I could fight through it, push the pace, and risk a more serious injury of my hamstring. Or, I could back off the pace, run easy, and try to enjoy myself. I don't want to lose time with heavy PT and possibly not be ready for other races this years, especially the Wasatch 100 this fall. I didn't have to think for more than a few seconds. I was going to wear a smile on my face and have fun! I backed off to a comfortable pace and started smiling.

My friend from mile 11 was at the dam. He asked if I was still in a rut. I told him that my leg was hurt, but that I was having fun. He smiled and said that was all that mattered. I spent the rest of the race smiling at and thanking all of the volunteers. I gave high-fives and danced through aid stations. I had a blast. It was the most fun I have had at a marathon. I was passed by a few people and I told them good job and wished them luck. In the canyon, I started to pass some half marathoners. It was inspiring to see them. I cheered them on and they returned the sentiment.

Around mile 19 I got really cold. For a few minutes, I was legitimately scared for how cold I was getting. My assumption is that the slower pace just didn't keep me as warm. I started feeling better a mile or so later, but was glad to finish and get in the warm tent.

So, I didn't get my goal of sub-2:50. I didn't race to my ability. But, I turned a bad situation into a good one and realized the power of one's attitude. Sure, I wish I was writing a report of a 2:49:XX or faster. That will come another day though. For now, I am happy with the race and my experience. I love running. I love the community and the support that is so abundant. We are all on the same journey and I am privileged to be a part of it.

Huge thanks go to Whitney and my folks for hanging at the finish in the cold with my two daughters. I couldn't have gotten to the start line in the shape I am in without all of those I get to train with and get tips from. If I start to name them, I am sure to forgot more than one. You know who you are and I give you a sincere Thank you!

I will post my splits below for fun. I am grateful I am in the shape I am where I can back off and run easy and still finish at 3 hours.

Going to have quite a shift in my training now for a few different reasons. Slower pace and more trails. Time to rehab my leg and avoid a bigger injury.

Up Mueller Park to Rudy's flat and on toward Burro Peak. Had to turn around early so I could get home to work on my yard. Putting in a paver patio is a lot of work. Quit digging and moving dirt at 4 and then stood from 6-11 at a concert. One of the longest days awake and on my feet in a long time.

I felt good this week and feel like it was a solid effort for my first "official" training week in the hills. I am hoping to get some vert on the trails 3-4 days a week and be on the road 2-3 days. I am also contemplating working with a coach so we will see what he/she says about my goals and plan.

We camped up near Strawberry River with my folks and sister and her kids. It was a fun night but arguably slightly cold for Olive. After breakfast, we went on a hike up a beautiful trail. Grey did awesome. Her little legs don't cover much ground but she kept on going. It was good for my legs to just walk after yesterday. Surprisingly, I am not sore. (Note- not counting these 2 miles for my weekly miles)

2 mile warmup and then a 3 mile time trial up Farmington Canyon. Goal was to find something that was a steep yet "runnable" grade for 3 miles. I will revisit this time trial every few weeks to see how I am improving at my climbing pace.

Time Trial
3 - 1,848 ft - 35:40
The first mile is mostly on the road of Farmington Canyon. This morning, the wind was howling down the canyon in my face. I may have pushed this mile a little too much, but the effort felt good. It was hard to judge with the constant wind and the occasional gusts. (10:20). I started to get into a rhythm on the trail and felt like my breathing was in sync. My quads started to burn though and I was excited when I crossed the half-way point and then the two mile mark. (12:09). I was slowing down. That was expected with the trail and having to cross a stream a couple of times. The final mile was rough with a couple of steep climbs. I wanted to hike them out, but I just gutted it out and kept on "running." (13:11).

Overall, it was a good experience and a good first time trial on this section. The first time doing a time trial on a new route is difficult because you don't know exactly what to expect. Now I have a benchmark. I look forward to returning to it in a few weeks. Perhaps I started a little too fast, but once again it was hard to tell with the wind. My lower back was starting to hurt by the end too. It is something I am trying to focus on strengthening. I cooled down by running the 3 miles back down to my car.

31.38 - 4,403 ft. - 5:50 on feet.

Hosted the Silver Creek Evening Invitational at my folks' tonight and into the morning. We had a great turnout of 19 runner who collectively ran 81 loops for 282 miles!

I had a goal of making a workout out of the run and not just completing. Goal was 9 x 3.4 loops. First three easy (36-38 min), middle three moderate (33-36 min), and the final three the fastest (29-32 min). I feel good about the workout and effort despite not running laps 8 and 9 faster.

We were scheduled to start at 8:00pm but I had no idea how many people would show. We ended up having 19 runners throughout the night who collectively ran at least 81 loops for a total of over 282 miles!

I finally started running just after 8:30pm. As the organizer, I had to hang around the start for a while as people trickled in. I wanted to make sure that they knew the route and plan. I ran the first two loops with Leslie and Pete. The sun had not completely set, so it was good for everyone to see at least one full loop in the light. The loop starts with a climb on a dirt road, levels off and has a slight down, before climbing again. Aside from a few more rollers, that is the extent of the climbing until the final steep climb in the last .3 of the loop. We should have taken that first climb easier knowing that we had 8 more loops to go, but it is always tough to reighn things in at the beginning, especially when the sun is shining and you are just starting to get a feel for things.

We purposefully slowed up for loop 2 and then Pete had to take off. Again, we took loop 3 easy and I was feeling really good. To this point, we had taken short stops in between to grab some more hydration or nutrition and then to drop Pete so he could head home.

First 3 laps came in at 32:43, 34:13, and 34:49 - So, all three closer to what should have been "moderate" pace and done during loops 4 through 6. However, there was no way to fix that now, so it was time to press on.

I ran the middle three loops mostly by myself. I realized I needed to be to the hairpin near 15:00 and to the first beaver pond at about 20:00. I had the downhill section from there to gain a little time if needed. However, the downhill is also the rockiest section and is tough to navigate in the dark. Loop 4 and 5 felt good and I was able to push the down and flats and still managed to run all of the ups. I hit my first down point on lap 6 near the top of the first climb. I hiked out the top section of the climb and gently rolled into a run again on the flat. I was almost a minute behind at the hairpin, but I pushed hard on the down and was back on track at the beaver pond. I started feeling good again and was ready to test the legs on the last three loops.

Middle 3 laps came in at 32:28, 31:07, and 30:56 - With the fatigue of the night setting in, I was pleased with these splits. In the grand scheme, they should have been slower, but it was time to push through and try and knock out the next three the fastest.

When I started loop 7, I quickly knew I was going to have to hike more of the ups and push the downs to make up time. I was almost 2 minutes back off of lap 6's time when I reached the top of the climb and was rolling onto the flat. I pushed and made up a minute by the hairpin and another minute by the beaver pond. My legs were feeling it, but that was the point of the evening. I started lap 8 right behind Leslie and Andrew. Leslie was one lap back by now but was still plugging on strong. I didn't catch them until the upper climb. I passed them and mentioned that I wasn't feeling great. I was going to really have to work to make up time. I circled down the hairpin and I saw Leslie and Andrew's headlamps up on the hill. Leslie yelled some words of encouragement and it was time to cruise. I was almost back on track by the beaver pond, but the rockiest section was still ahead and I felt like I was about at max speed for the conditions and the lack of light. I passed Chris right before "the trenches." It was good to see him still getting after it. As I was part way through the trenches, I hooked my left toe hard on a rock and instantly felt something pull in my left knee. It was something I had never felt before. All the possibilities quickly ran through my head and I was hoping it was nothing serious. I kept pushing the down, but backed off a hair as to not fall on any rocks or push the knee too much. I was still pleased with my lap 8 time and by now the knee was in quite a bit of pain. I decided to not push the final loop, but I wanted to complete what I had started. Leslie and I finished the final loop together nice and easy as a cool down and I was really glad to finish all 9 loops. My body was hurting and the knee was throbbing, but it hadn't gotten worse.

Final 3 laps came in at 30:48, 33:37, and 39:57. If I had not hooked my toe and hurt my knee, I think I could have pulled off at least one sub-30. I would have really had to work with how tired and fatigued I was, but I think it was in the realm of possibility. The bigger picture is more important. It was a great night and a great workout. Packed up after Davy Crockett came in from his 9th loop and I got back to my folks and in bed by just about 3am.

More tomorrow on the knee and how I am feeling post 50k in the dark!

Did a 60 minute workout and the above data is from the entire run. The workout consisted of 10 minutes super easy warming up, 30 minutes uphill at ~80% effort, 30 minutes downhill running controlled but not cruising, and 10 minutes of cool down.

I chose Mueller Park for this workout as it has some consistent up that would be good for the 30 minutes. I have run it casually but never pushed the pace. I felt alright and am happy with my times and effort on both the up and down.

nice work. i love mueller park -- a good place to do a workout like that because you can get some solid up and down running without too much technical terrain to break up your pace, so you can really push it (not that i ever have...and i still always fall).

your training seems to be more focused on the trails now -- is that just for something different or are you preparing specifically for a trail race? you've probably already been asked this but i'm out of the loop. :)

From james (runmehappy) on Fri, Jun 26, 2015 at 11:04:18 from 50.203.76.218

For sure Allie. Mueller is perfect for this type of workout.

Don't worry, no one has asked me actually...at least on the blog. I am specifically training for a trail race in September. Consequently, the transition came at a good time for me physically and mentally. My left leg didn't love the road after Ogden and I was feeling some burnout.

Are you training for anything specific?

From allie on Fri, Jun 26, 2015 at 14:45:15 from 24.99.46.55

i think that's a good call to seek out a new challenge/focus for a bit -- your buildup for ogden was fantastic, but no doubt it was also quite taxing. good luck with the trail training -- enjoy those mtns!

my racing schedule is still coming together. tentatively, i'm planning on a half marathon in the fall -- like, a serious one (whatever that means). in the meantime, i'll probably jump in some late summer 5ks, and i'm running a 10k next weekend (peachtree sweat fest).

Goal was 13 in the hills somewhere with 2 at marathon effort at the end. I decided that along the fireroad and BST would be a good spot. Unfortunately, I don't know that area very well so I took a few wrong turns, ending up in someone's backyard at one point. I felt a little sluggish on and off and had a bit of knee pain that was more of a dull ache. Took one gel roughly 40 minutes in to see if I needed some calories because I didn't eat breakfast before. I felt better when I picked up the pace for the 2 miles at marathon effort. I decided to do these at miles 11 (74 ft) and 12 (135 ft) so I could have one mile of a cool down. It will be interesting for me to see how I feel on tomorrow's long(er) run.

3:30 AM alarm to run Lamb's canyon to Brighton.

Half a mile up the road of Lamb's my legs were already aching. I was worried it was going to be a really long morning. I quickly realized though that this was perfect. It would be a good long run on tired legs. When I run this section in a couple months, I will have 52 miles behind me. So, I pushed on.

The goal for today was to run the majority of the route. There were bound to be a few climbs that required hiking but I wanted those to be as few as possible. I feel like I met this goal even though I hiked a hair more than I originally planned  the legs were sore from this week, especially yesterday's run.

Overall, I am pleased with the run. We ran faster than I would have guessed we could have. I am pleased and look forward to another week of training.

Also, I spent the rest of the day working in the yard in 100 degree heat. Mowing, trimming, digging holes, and fixing sprinklers. Didn't finally sit down until 9:30 PM. Good heat training...I am spent!

I'll post a summary of the week tomorrow.

Another week down. They seem to be flying by. I can't believe it is the beginning of July this week. Which in turn, means my favorite holiday is this coming weekend.

I felt good about this past week of training. I maintained high mileage (a little less this week because last week I had the 50k event). I increased my overall vertical. And I got a long run in on the Wasatch route. The next two weeks will be interesting with scheduling because of some travel, but I look forward to them. 75 days.

I'm optimistic I can solve your "find a trail shoe as good as the Kinvara" problem. Take a look at the Nomad TR, just released. I have a pair on the way... the Saucony rep told me they are amazing. They are build on the Kinvara last, but the toe box is a lot wider, and they are using some new rubber that is grippier and apparently doesn't wear down as fast. I'll let you know how they are.

I hope the mild fall --> EL NINO ATTACK SUPERWINTER prediction is true :-)

Met Matt C. at Fernwood and went up the trail to Chinscraper. Goal was to run and only drop to a hike in a few necessary spots and to push the effort more on the second half of the climbing. It was my first time up this particular trail, so I was not familiar with it. It was beautiful to catch the sunrise up top.

The trail was significantly different than I had expected. It was more runnable than I had thought and had more changes in grade as well. Part way up it became really wet. The trail was fine, but all the bushes were soaked from last night's rain. These bushes had overgrown much of the trail to the point that the bushes on either side were touching in the middle of the trail anywhere from ankle height up to my shoulders. Didn't take long before I was really wet and for a few minutes I got a little cold. It was pretty neat to experience, but I would have liked it to be more clear as I felt at times the bushes were about to trip me as I blazed through them. I also was not able to push the effort on the second half as much as I would have liked because I couldn't see the trail through the bushes. I was just running and hoping to not hit a rock, root, or pot hole. I still feel like I made good time though.

Overall, I felt good on the run. My lower back / upper glutes were pretty tired by the end from the climbing. It was roughly 1:34 to the top. I continued on for a little less than a quarter mile so I could hit 6 miles. Back at the ridge, I sat and emptied a few rocks from my shoes and waited for Matt for a few minutes before descending down and ultimately meeting him at the bottom of the final pitch up Chinscraper.

I woke at 3:45 and didn't eat anything before the run. I consumed about 65 calories during via an electrolyte drink in a 12oz handheld and also sipped on water from my pack. I was pretty hungry by the end, and would have consumed some nutrition had I been going farther.

Up the boardwalk and into the south end of Huntington Beach and back. Roughly 35% of this run is on the boardwalk in Newport. Fun and pretty to run on. Then, you are forced into the alley for a couple miles before crossing a bridge and ending up in south Huntington. Overall, it is a pretty ugly and dirty run. I wish the boardwalk was a couple miles longer.

Goal was to just take it easy today for 90 minutes. Going to try and get in 2 workouts this week. Likely tomorrow and Thursday...depending on vacation plans.

Same route as yesterday, just a little bit farther. Goal for today's workout was warmup, 20 minutes at lactate threshold or roughly my half marathon pace, 15 minute resting "jog" and then another 25 minutes at pace. Cool down a couple miles.

I was actually slightly anxious about this workout because I have not run any type of tempo run on the road since before Ogden in May. I didn't know how I would feel or really what pace to shoot for. I figured that somewhere between a 6:20-6:30 would be about right on the flats, but also worried that might be a little ambitious. I decided to start at about 6:30 and work into it. I figured I could get 3 miles in 20 minutes and then shoot for 4 in the second set.

It turned out well and I am pleased with it. I pushed the last mile below my half marathon pace to finish strong. Zero hamstring pain during. Now to see if it flares up later. That is the true test.

1st set - 6:30, 6:23, 6:19
2nd set - 6:18, 6:13, 6:09, 5:58

Not too long ago, during a conversation with a couple coaches (who were/are not coaching me), I told them I wanted to train for a certain mountain ultra. In unison they said "Don't do it. You will lose ALL your speed!"

Happily trying to prove them wrong....so far.

Did not go as planned. I did not feel good walking out the door. I contemplated not even attempting the workout I had scheduled, but decided after my 2ish mile warmup to give it a shot anyway. Goal was 2-1-2 with 1/2 mile recovery jog in between. In the middle of the second mile of the first repeat, I felt my left leg just feel off. I was almost done with the first repeat so I stuck it out. However, I pulled the plug at .7 of the second repeat. I felt crappy and then my left leg started acting up. It just didn't like the pace and I was not willing to risk any type of injury. I ran easy the rest of the time.

All things considered I feel like it was a really solid week of training. I was supposed to be traveling all week but it was cut short. This actually made it possible to get into the mountains 2 days when I wouldn't have at all had we stuck to our original plan. I logged more miles and had more time on my feet. 30 min hill workout which consisted of 30 minutes up at roughly marathon effort and then 30 minutes down at a controlled pace but still running. Overall felt good. I didn't push it as hard on this workout as I did a couple weeks ago on a similar workout. I wanted to stay more near the marathon effort where before I was pushing the effort harder and was spent by the end of the climb.

Up - 3.16 miles - 807 ft. - 30 minutes

Down - 4.13 miles - -1,086 ft. - 30 minutes

So, Garmin provides elevation corrections based on professional surveys for runs. If however your device has a barometric altimeter, those corrections are turned off by default. The above elevations are based on my device which has a barometric altimeter. Below are the numbers based on the surveys. Would be interesting to know which is more accurate. Quite the discrepancy. Also, all of my runs up until today have been based on the professional surveys because today was my first run with a barometric altimeter (Fenix 3).

Overall elevation - 2,425
30 min up - 1,021
30 min down - -1,447

Now I don't know which is more accurate or which to use for my weekly totals. I just went through a few of my past runs and when I turn off the corrections, sometimes the total elevation goes up and sometimes it goes down. So...who knows. My assumption is the barometric altimeter is more accurate than elvation based off of GPS (articles I have read support that assumption), but I don't know about how accurate the "professional surveys" are that Garmin is using.

There was a 10 minute window this morning where the sky to the east was on fire with the sunrise, and a giant rainbow to the west. It was incredible - I was blown away with how cool it was! I figured if anyone else noticed that it would be you.

Jen and Jake - I am glad you both got to see it as well. It was stunning. For a brief moment I wished I had a camera, but then I knew it wouldn't do it justice and some images are better left undocumented. Jake, I am glad you thought of me. That makes me smile. There are some things worth waking early for and today we got one of those.

From Scott on Tue, Jul 21, 2015 at 12:05:31 from 74.95.55.77

I also caught that incredible view. It was a bright pink to the east for a few minutes and then turned to a bright yellow/orange. Coupled with the rainbow to the west, made for a great morning.

Workout of 3 x 15 minutes at a decent effort on rolling trail. I figured East Mountain Wilderness Park out and back would be perfect for this. It has lots of runnable up and down. Goal was to have the interval effort be just slower than marathon. I think I probably pushed it a little harder than that though. It was still very controlled and was a good workout. I felt really strong this morning. Roughly 5 minute active recovery in between. Nice to practice the transitions from up to down to flat etc and holding momentum and effort.

Revisited the 3 mile time trial this morning up Farmington Canyon and the singletrack. It has been a month since my last go at it. I was hoping to have improved over the last month. If not, what have I been doing? Turned out well. There was a head wind again, but maybe slightly less than last time. About the same conditions.

Right from the get go I knew my legs were feeling stronger. I figured I could keep mile 1 under 10 minutes. Miles 2 and 3 are then on the single track. Happy to have been faster on each of the 3 miles. I was not as spent at the end as I was last time either. All good signs. Now on to tomorrow's mid-long run and going back-to-back on Saturday with a long(er) run.

Lamb's to Brighton and back. More later, but short version is my headlamp all but died at mile 3ish. I went off route and was lost in thick bushes and trees. Ended up with slaughtered legs and running by the light of my phone for over an hour. Pulled out of the rut when the sun came up but then I rolled my ankle slightly. Another week has gone by and it was a good one for me. I got 2 mid-week workouts in with a big improvement on my hill climb time trial. Had a mid-long run Friday with a long run yesterday. Easy warm morning up Mueller and back. First trail run in the Challenger and I am liking it so far. Hoping to run it on Saturday for 25. If it performs well on that, it will likely be the shoe I decide to race in.

Realized this morning that if everything goes as planned this week, I will run the most miles I ever have in one week and I will run the most miles in one month. In April 2013 I ran a 90.75 mile week and finished that month at 356. For me, it is even more relevant because nearly all my miles right now are in the mountains, which is requiring a substantial more time than road miles. Last week was by far the most training hours I have put in at 15 hours.

Well...what to really say about this one. It was long. It was hot. Did I mention it was hot? I ran out of water and learned a few good lessons. I feel like I have told the story too many times now that I don't even feel like typing it out.

In short, things felt good until about 18. Then, I didn't feel well and was having a hard time keeping my core temp down. I ended up running out of water and my electrolyte fluid and did a lot of walking, especially the last 4-6 miles. I lost about 8 lbs over the course of the run. The last 4 miles were miserable. Finished and spent the remainder of the day trying to get fluids back in my system so I could hopefully run 25 Saturday morning. I was willing to not run at all or cut it short if I couldn't get feeling well.

Those first 40 miles of the course are my least favorite. I will have to be very aware on race day of the temp and how my body is handling it. It will be easier with aid stations. I don't know if I will ever do this run again self supported.

It was on the first part of the course Jake. Pretty open and exposed for a lot of it. Not a huge fan. I plan on it being quite a different experience with aid stations aka ice and water!

It is remarkable how the body can function so differently from one day to the next. I woke up at 3:00 and was feeling pretty good. I made sure to start hydrating right away and got some fuel as well as I drove to Brighton.

Started off easy up the initial climb and then eased into the steep down. I started feeling good and simply enjoyed the rest of the day. I ran this same route 2 weeks ago in 4:32 and would have been happy with anything between 5:00 and 5:30 going into today's run. I figured an hour slower on tired legs would still be doing well. I found myself walking less than 2 weeks ago and just holding some steady paces. Then I was able to open up the last few miles and it felt really good to run! Finished in 4:47 and felt really great about that time.

Now it is time to rest up for a few days and knock out a few more weeks before tapering.

That was a great week. I am pleased with how it turned out and am excited for a few more weeks of training before tapering off for the big dance. 60 miles in 2 days is by far the most I have ever done. My body held up well and that is promising. I spent more time training this week than I ever have. Almost 17 and a half hours. If I included all the prep and drive time to and from trails it would be well over 20 hours this week. Commitment is the name of this game right now. Walked a couple miles today to loosen up and aid recovery. Will take a few days really easy and then back at it.

A mile later we were almost to the crest and thankfully headed back to the cars. I got really cold and was ready to be done. Had the heavy rain not hit us for those 5ish minutes, it would have remained a pleasant evening and I would have hoped for 16-18 miles. So, I will plod along with a couple evening shakeouts and a possible short shakeout on Sunday to loosen up the legs and hit 100.

Ran the loop again but excluded the out and back on the Crest. 12 miles for loop 2. We then ran 3 miles of road down to Elbow Fork, did an about face, and ran back up the road to finish at 32 miles and 100 miles in 6 days! Glad to hit the goal of 100 miles for peak week and was happy to run the 3 of road up at the end without dropping to a hike at all.

great work. you are very prepared.

Fritz - Thanks. It was a big run for sure and fun to hit the 100 mile in a week mark. I definitely feel like my prep has gone really well. Happy to be where I am in my training. Scaling back now for a gradual 3 week taper.

allie - Thanks! You you could do a 100 mile week any time you want. You have the base and fitness. Having an extra day would be nice, but one day of rest suits me well. ;)

Nice cap to the week. You got in some quality efforts in addition to the big miles... didn't just slog through it.

Hope everything goes smoothly for you the next couple weeks. You've certainly prepared with a great focus for this race.

Thanks Jen. I hope to not drive more than 20 miles the day after my race! However, I plan on logging some miles with you before St. George. Even if it is just a short easy jaunt during your taper. I am bound to have some great stories of covering 100 miles!

50 minute steady state run up and down Mueller. Did a 2 mile warmup and then 25 minutes up and 25 minutes down. Finished with about 1.5 cooldown. Felt good overall, but I went through a couple ups and downs on the way up. (how is that for confusing?). My legs are still recovering from last week and now I am into the taper. Don't feel fresh yet. Hope that feeling comes sometime next week.

Shakeout around the neighborhood. I had all but made up mind I wasn't going to get out because I got home late and I was looking forward to going to bed. I told Whit I was supposed to go for a quick 30 minute shakeout, but that I wasn't going to. She replied, "Go. You can then say you did everything and gave it your all going into Wasatch." That is the definition of support.

Easy out and back from East Mtn. My body is tired. There is a saying that goes something like "the mind is willing but the body is weak." My body and mind can't seem to make up their minds as to which is willing and which is weak. Last night, my body was willing to go run, but I had to convince my mind. This morning was the opposite. I was in one of the deepest sleeps I can remember when it came time to wake up. Doing work.

Big Mountain to Lamb's with Daniel. He slept in. I woke him 20 minutes after we were supposed to meet to drop a car at Lamb's by calling him. He finally arrived at 6:45 and we headed up to Big Mountain. It worked out fine to be a little later. This section of the course is often referred to as "the furnace" "the overn" and "hell." It is actually not that bad of a section by itself. However, it is pretty exposed and on race day happens to fall at the heat of the day for most people.

So, now I have run every mile of the Wasatch 100 course.

So...I wish I had more time to write this and maybe I will come back and add some thoughts.

Tomorrow is my big race for the year and one of the biggest in a few ways of my running "career." Sounds odd to call it that but I'll leave it. I am nervous and excited. So much logistical work goes into prepping for this race with drop bags etc. I am ready to just go out and do the thing I love, run! I feel like my training cycle couldn't have gone smoother. It now time to execute. Goal is to take it easy and have fun.

The tag line for the Wasatch 100 is "100 miles of Heaven and Hell." So, I guess I will see you on the other side after a day of running.

5 miles with Jeff on the parkway. Again, painful. However, not as bad as last Thursday. The pain set in at the quarter mile mark, but didn’t ever get too much worse. Decided to turn back at 2.5 though. Had the knee area looked at by a PT last night. He moved it all about and I didn’t feel any pain. Pushing where the IT band connects caused pain. He does not believe anything is torn and said I couldn’t really hurt it by running, but it will slow the healing process. Going to just take it a day at a time.

Took the morning off. Wrapped the knee and went to work. Still not feeling great. Hopefully things start feeling better with more time off. Mowed the lawn by headlight and finished just after 8:30 PM. My IT hurt a little while mowing. The constant turning did not help things I don’t think. I decided to hop on the treadmill to test the waters. I rode for 35 minutes, the majority of which I was out of the saddle and in a harder gear. Interestingly, sitting in a normal biking position hurt my IT band a bit. Leaning forward and resting on my elbows made the pain go away. Standing and pushing it along in a harder gear (slow but steady) didn’t hurt either. Ok, I can do this for a while but man the spin bike is BORING!

6 miles with Jeff on the parkway. Almost no pain...almost. Took yesterday off and felt almost no pain all day. My knee sleeve arrived that I ordered. I figured a little compression and heat might help a little. I wore it all night and when I woke this morning I decided to take it easy this morning and give it a go. Felt good and kept it nice and easy. Started to feel a little tight after we turned around but it loosened back up. The final mile things started to ache a bit, but nothing serious. Ran a couple sub8 without knowing. Likely going to take tomorrow off again or spin. No reason at all to push things.

I had a goal at the start of the year to hit 3,000 miles in 2015. I was doing great and on track but the last couple months have been tough. So, it would be a stretch at this point (347.91 miles in December), but I am not completely ruling it out. I made a goal and I am going to keep trying. Though, I will play it smart and bag it if necessary. I have already logged more than last year so that is an accomplishment.

PM - 6 mills

That is a solid goal. Plus, you are much tougher than I braving the temps this morning.

Often, the only way for me to fight my demons is to look them straight in the eyes and face them head on.

That is a long time on the treadmill

Holy moly... 20 on the mill???? That's intense. But sometimes those demons are big and you've gotta run long.

Felt great to be on trail. The snow was soft and sticky. Was worried about it being slick but it was ideal. Only issue was not having enough time to go for a second round up and down the canyon.

Had the flu the last few days.

AM - park loop of 7 on the road mostly.

PM - East Mountain to Fernwood and back. Good to be on the trail. Felt good but I couldn't get warm. Lingering illness likely. I could get used to some double like today.

Park Loop on the road snow! Incredible morning running in roughly 6 inches of snow in the middle of the roads. I would welcome a few more days like today and I know Jake and Andrea wouldn't complain.

Well...I guess I will consider this morning the worst running accident to date. I was heading north on Main Street running on the sidewalk. I was passing a small dealership and I have always had a fear of taking a corner of a license plate right to the shin. I was clipping along in the center of the sidewalk and the next thing I knew, I was lying on the concrete in the fetal position. A metal fence post was bent forward and I caught it right in the middle of my left quad. I finally made it to my feet and hobbled 3 miles back to my car. I am scared for how it will feel later today and tomorrow.

Today was definitely the most hazardous morning of the winter thus far... random/small/unexpected ice spots all over the place.

Hope this doesn't cause you too much trouble.

From Hille on Mon, Dec 21, 2015 at 13:19:58 from 71.199.52.49

That doesn't sound too fun. Hopefully it doesn't bother you too much

Thanks Jake and Hille.

It surprisingly doesn't hurt too bad today. I may try and get out tomorrow for something easy just to get blood flowing if I can.

Hope you both enjoy your Christmas!

Took it easy with the quad and pole incident. Not too bad. Could have been a lot worse. Can't imagine the damage had it been my knee.
